Plan: Pro, with Direct checkout switched on.
An upsell is an extra offer shown after the order is placed — full screen, right on top of the confirmation. The buyer’s order is already safe, so there’s zero risk to the sale: accepting adds the item to the same order with one click (no re-entering details, no second checkout), declining just moves on. Open Checkout settings → Upsells to build your funnels.

What the buyer experiences

1

Order confirmed

The buyer confirms in the popup and immediately sees an “order confirmed” screen with your offer on it.
2

The offer

A product with an image, variant picker, and its discounted price. If your funnel has several steps, they’re shown one at a time (“Step 1 of 2”).
3

One click

Accept adds the product to the order they just placed and shows the new total. Decline moves to the next step or closes.
4

Done

The buyer lands on the standard Shopify order-status page. Everything they accepted is part of the one order — one shipment, one label, one COD amount.

Building a funnel

1

Create a funnel

Give it a name and choose when it triggers — for example, when specific products (or any product) are in the order.
2

Add offer steps

Pick the product to offer at each step and set its discount. Keep it to one or two steps — every extra step costs attention.
3

Save and test

Place a test order through direct checkout and walk through the offer as a buyer.

What makes a good upsell

Offer what naturally goes with the purchase: the matching accessory, a refill, a care kit. Relevance is what converts.
The pitch is “only now, at this price, with zero extra effort.” A visible discount against the normal price is the engine of the whole mechanic.
Impulse add-ons work best well under the value of the main purchase.
One strong offer beats three mediocre ones. Buyers who decline twice are done — let them get to their confirmation.
Upsells require direct checkout because the offer edits an order that already exists — in the default Shopify-checkout mode there’s no order yet when the popup closes.
